When you think of the word insanity, do you see images of mental institutions and heavily medicated people? Whatever visions enter your mind, they likely aren’t ones you identify yourself with, right? Well, according to Albert Einstein, Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results. Hmm…maybe we should reflect on that.

How often have you found yourself gravitating back to the familiar; to what worked in the past? Our frame of reference is a logical starting point, but what happens most often is we become so entrenched in “what worked before” that we fail to recognize we are dynamic beings who are constantly in a state of flux, all the way down to our individual cells.

If you feel like you’re playing a never-ending game of chase with your tail (my cat, Shadow, LOVES this game, but even she eventually moves on…) take a step back and consider that a maybe the rules of the game have changed since last time you played. These “rules” could be anything; your hormones, stress level, attitude, sleep, nutrition, activity, work, family, or maybe there’s simply a more effective approach that you didn’t know about before.

So, if you’re feeling stuck in a rut, frustrated, confused, or even worse, beating your psychological self up for lack of progress, it’s time to take a step back. It may even need to be a BIG step (I can attest to this from personal experience!). Remind yourself that the days are going to pass no matter what, so why not do something different?
